The National Courage Award is presented to a member of the public or the Services who has displayed exceptional bravery and courage without concern for themselves.
The ISIA National Courage Award 2009 winners are the Achill Coastguard. One nominator said, “These men and women give up their time to train in the necessary life saving skills, respond to emergency calls and provide a vital serviced to the community”. In August this year (2009) Patrick Williamson was swept from the rocks and into the Atlantic Ocean while fishing off Achill. In his commendation, Patrick said, “I have no doubt whatever that without the quick response of the Achill Coastguard Team combined with the work of the helicopter crew, I would not have survived”. Patrick spent 90 minutes in the water before being rescued. Ray Hughes, Officer in Charge, and Noreen Sweeney, Deputy Officer in Charge, accepted the award on behalf of the Coastguard.
