| Last year the men and women of the Achill Coast Guard, all volunteers, were awarded the National Courage Award. The nomination came from Patrick Williamson from UK, who was saved from the waters around Achill by the Coast Guard on 22nd August 2009
The National Defence Forces were recognised in 2008 for their 50th year’s involvement with the United Nations Peace-keeping forces during which time they made a massive contribution to world peacekeeping.
A brave individual, Eileen Feehan, won the National Courage Award in 2007 who showed a level of courage normally only seen in Hollywood movies. On the 14th December 2006 she visited the house of an 84 year old woman for whom she was a carer and found the house on fire. She went into the house through black smoke and found the lady on the bedroom floor and dragged her to safety.
